Typical challenges
- Misalignment of rotor and wind direction → energy losses up to 10 %
- Turbulence and wake effects reduce measurement accuracy
- Nacelle-mounted sensors provide delayed/disturbed data
- Difficult access and exposure to harsh environmental conditions
- Need for reliable, maintenance-free systems over long periods
What we deliver
- Windflower: forward-mounted wind measurement system based on aerospace-grade Pitot technology
- High-precision data on wind direction, speed, turbulence & temperature in the undisturbed flow
- Improved yaw alignment with validated up to 10 % energy gain and reduced structural fatigue
- Plug-and-play integration, no alignment needed, no moving parts – suitable for retrofit or new turbines
- Maintenance-free operation over months; proven performance in rain, snow, and icing conditions
Project example
Field Testing on a Vestas V52 Turbine with DTU Denmark
Setup
As part of a joint test campaign with the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), a Windflower sensor was installed on a Vestas V52 wind turbine at the DTU Risø Campus. The system was tested over two months and benchmarked against a met mast and nacelle-mounted instruments.
Challenge
Accurate yaw and wind data acquisition in real-world conditions – including rain and icing – with minimal flow disturbance and fast deployment.
Key Findings
- Up to 10% energy gain through improved yaw alignment
- Accurate, stable data even in rain and icing conditions
- Lower noise and higher sensitivity than conventional sensors
- Maintenance-free operation
